VAL SMETS

7 November – 17 December 2024

Will Go Undersky

Val Smets’ Will go undersky explores the intersection between nature, human identity, and the deeper existential questions that arise from our relationship with the world around us. Through mythological archetypes and hybrid forms of plants and humans, Smets reflects on the themes of transformation and renewal, drawing on the dualities of light and shadow, life and death. Her work, influenced by surrealism, creates a dreamlike space where reality and imagination merge.

Using a pastel palette that deepens the visual rhythm of each painting, the exhibition evokes both dynamic energy and moments of stillness, inviting viewers to reflect on their own connection to nature. The title of the exhibition, referencing Duchamp’s “Will go underground,” reverses the idea, suggesting an exploration of the spaces between sky and earth, where the visible and invisible meet.
